Sheila Thompson
I am a fibre artist specializing in handmade felt art pieces. I use fibres like wool, silk, linen, cotton and paper as well as raw organic materials such as bark, leaf skeletons and cocoons to create my art, rather than using paint. Trained as a professional biogeographer and ecologist, I bring a unique perspective to understanding the dynamics of land. This perspective informs my felt landscapes, which in turn draw on my memories from field work in Canada, Africa and the Caribbean. Other series draw on the idea of mixed outcomes involving DNA representations, African porcupine quills and red and black colours.
