Dan Murphy
I'm a self-taught artist, born in Ottawa, now working in Toronto, Canada. I began painting with watercolours in 1988, then acrylics and am currently painting in oils. I'm presently seeking gallery representation. My current paintings are inspired by the wonderful, magical feeling I experience in the strange reality of my dreams. I am fascinated by this limitless, parallel reality which exists entirely in our minds. Trying to capture the feeling I have after waking from a vivid dream, my recent paintings set a small stage where a cast of unlikely characters assemble, seeming so real, yet at the same time in a situation too strange to be real. They present a visual mystery, seeming to promise some message or secret, wanting to be discovered, but always unknowable. Provoking curiosity and wonder, I feel compelled to explain my dreams, but as I try, grasping at a description, the images quickly vaporize and are gone, back in to the memory chamber that they drifted out of. As my dreams are a visual reality while they appear, I’ve chosen to paint them in a realistic style. Oil painting is the medium with which I choose to express the images I conceive, because for me, a certain magic occurs when the illusion of real world objects are conjured with paint. To create some of this magic, give the feeling of an illusive mystery, using a vivid, forthright style is the ultimate goal of my painting.
